Industry: Rail
Problem
Fuel contamination poses significant challenges to diesel train engines, resulting in severe adverse effects on engine performance, reliability, and lifespan.
One of the most common types of fuel contamination is water, which can enter the fuel system through condensation or leaks in storage tanks and pipelines.
Northern Rail were faced with the challenge of reducing the number of filter changes and protecting injectors to increase uptime across their fleets, whilst also delivering a reduction in fuel consumption as part of their sustainability initiatives.
Solution
Northern Rail chose to work with FuelActive in order to help improve reliability, protect sensitive components and reduce costs, whilst at the same time, reducing their environmental impacts.
Unipart Rail and FuelActive have been working in partnership to deliver a solution designed to save fuel, reduce costs and save the planet.
The specially designed fuel pick-up system, unique to the rail industry, follows the same pedigree as the FuelActive range. The proven technology delivers 92% cleaner fuel to diesel engines, reducing fuel related contamination, increasing fuel efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions. As a result, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are reduced by up to 5% and engine reliability is improved, reducing the total cost of ownership and extending the life expectancy of the engine. Blockages and damage to fuel pumps and injectors are also avoided, reducing failure related downtime and maintenance costs.
FuelActive units have been fitted to the CAF 195 Civity DMU with early results paying off. Compared to the original fuel line architecture, FuelActive reduces filter contamination by 82.5% in pre-filters and 66.8% in secondary filters. Across the filtration system FuelActive reduces contamination by 1.727 grams or 82.2% compared to a conventional pick-up pipe.
